Butterflies are distributed worldwide except Antarctica, totalling some 18,500 species Of these, 775 are Nearctic; 7,700 Neotropical; 1,575 Palearctic; 3,650 Afrotropical;and 4,800 in Australian/Oceania regions.

Beetles are by far the largest order of insects: the roughly 400,000 species make up about 40% of all insect species so far described, and about 25% of all animals.

There are thought to be approximately 160,000 species of moth, many of which have yet to be described. Most species of moth are nocturnal, but there are also crepuscular and diurnal species.

Insects are the most diverse group of animals; they include more than a million described species and represent more than half of all known living organisms.

The total number of extant species is estimated at between six and ten million; potentially over 90% of the animal life forms on Earth are insects.
